James Henry "Jim" Carter 
October 29, 1949 - October 23, 2023 

James Henry “Jim” Carter, of Cameron died Monday, October 23, 2023 as the result of a four-wheeler accident at his ranch. Memorial services will be 3:00 pm Thursday, October 26 at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Chapel, followed by a come and go dinner at The Venue at Railfan.

Jim, a life-long rancher, was born October 29, 1949 in Cleburne, Texas to Bert Smith Carter, Jr. and Prudence Pearl (Paine) Carter.

Graduating Texas A & M University with a B.S. in Agronomy in 1972, he soon then married Pat Carlile. He volunteered in the Milam County Junior Livestock Association and Texas Simmental & Simbrah Association for many years. His passion for ranching extended to his daughters, grandsons, and many other FFA/4H kids, taking him & Pat across the State of Texas most weekends to stock shows.

His lifelong career of cattle breeding included several Grand Champion Heifers encompassing the countries of Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil and Panama. Jim & Pat founded JHC Ranch in Milam County in 1979 when they moved back to be close to family and raise their two daughters. As a lifetime entrepreneur, he started his own dirt & gravel business in 1988 and went into full time ranching in 1996 where he continued to work until his passing at age 73.

Jim was preceded in death by his daughter Angela Keri Carter in 1994 and is survived by:

Wife Pat Carter of Cameron

Daughter Tricia Carter Wood & husband Brett of Cameron

Brother Alvin Boyd Carter of Henrietta

3 grandchildren Adam & Kadie Carter and Corbin Haber
