Services for Wayne Steelman, 93, of Dallas, Texas will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, Dec. 2, 2024 at Crawford-A. Crim Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Mark Crim officiating. Interment will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park under the direction of Crawford-A. Crim Funeral Home of Henderson. Visitation will be from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m., Monday, Dec. 2, 2024, one hour before the service at the funeral home.
Wayne passed away at 93 years old after a brief illness. He was surrounded in love by his wife and family.
Wayne was born in 1931 in Shamrock, TX. He grew up in East Texas where he graduated from Gaston Independent School District. Wayne met the love of his life, Betty (Johnson) Steelman while both were in high school. They married in 1952 and recently celebrated 72 years of marriage.
Wayne spent the majority of his career in the US Army Corps of Engineers. He received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University. He was a decorated Vietnam veteran receiving many citations during his career including the purple heart and silver star for heroism in combat.
Wayne retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1984. After leaving the military, Wayne worked for the Texas A&M University System Engineering Extension Service as a division head until his second retirement. Wayne began volunteering at the George HW Bush Presidential Library shortly before it opened in 1997 and served as a docent for 12 years.
Wayne and Betty lived in Bryan/College Station from 1979-2023. They settled into retirement and built their dream home in College Station. Wayne and Betty enjoyed travel, the arts, volunteer work, A&M sports, and spending time with their son & his family. They moved to Dallas in 2023 to spend more time with their son and his family.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Jewel Steelman; his brother Darwin L Steelman; and his brother Elwyn C Steelman; his nephew Michael Steelman, his niece Rhonda Stephens, and his niece Brenda Ramsey.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Betty (Johnson) Steelman; his son Joel Steelman; his daughter-in-law Julie (Martin) Steelman; and his grand-daughter Katherine Steelman; his sister Barbara E Hudson; his brother Jerry D Steelman and his wife Judy; his sister-in-law Kathryn Taylor; his nieces, Patricia Thurm, Carol Charen, Debra Sullivan, Sonya Cline, and Theresa Suddeth, and his nephews, Dean Steelman and Kyle Steelman.
