Dan Byron Bunker, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on October 27, 2024, at the age of 87. He was born in Nixon, Texas, on July 17, 1937, to Virginia Lee Deason Bunker and William Ruben Bunker.
Dan was married to Rita (Kneuper) Bunker on December 23, 1967, and together they shared a loving marriage for over 56 years. Dan’s legacy lives on through his children, Byron (wife Amy Stafford), Danna Alcorn (husband Rob), Bret (wife Rachel Gonzales), Ben (wife Jamye Coppin), and Danica Kenjura (husband Chris), along with his 10 grandchildren: Austin Bunker, Madison Bunker, Robert Daniel IV (RD) Alcorn, Taylor Alcorn, Michael Bunker, Gabriela Bunker, Keira Luevano, William Bunker, Benjamin Kenjura, and Dan Kenjura. He is also survived by his brother, Charles Bunker of Georgetown, TX, and his nephew, Collin Stanford of Cedar Park, TX.
Dan graduated from Salado High School in 1955 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University in 1959. He moved to Boerne, Texas soon after graduation working for the Texas Highway Department overseeing construction of the new interstate system, IH10, around Boerne. In 1973, Dan opened Bunker Engineering, where for the next 40 years he worked shaping the contours of Kendall County designing roads, drains, home and business foundations, and laying out new home developments. In 1974, Dan was elected as Kendall County's first County Surveyor.
In addition to his work, Dan was deeply involved in his community. He was a founding board member of both the Hill Country Crisis Pregnancy Center and the Boerne Optimist Soccer League, reflecting his commitment to helping others and building a stronger, more connected community.
A member of the Boerne Bible Church, Dan lived his life with faith, love, and service to those around him. He was passionate about his family, loved watching Aggie football, and took immense pride in his children and grandchildren. Dan was proud that his children Byron TAMU’92, Danna TAMU’93, Bret TAMU’96, Ben TAMU’97 and Danica TAMU’98, and daughter in law Rachel Gonzales TAMU’96 all graduated from Texas A&M University and would be so happy now to see his grandchildren Michael TAMU’23, Taylor TAMU’26, Keira TAMU’28 and Dan TAMU’29 on their way to graduation as well. He was known for his kindness, generosity, and sense of humor, always ready with a smile and a helping hand.
Dan’s memory will be cherished by his family, friends, and the many lives he touched. He is now at peace, reunited with his loved ones in heaven.
