Alexander Hamilton "Alex" Pegues, Jr.
June 7, 1929 - January 6, 2025
Alexander Hamilton Pegues, Jr. passed away peacefully at home in the arms of family on January 6, 2025, at the age of 95.
Alex was born on June 7, 1929 in Dallas, Texas to the late Alexander Hamilton Pegues, Sr. and Francis Bowers Pegues, moving within two years to Houston and then to San Antonio, where he lived to age 13. The family then moved to Eagle Pass, Texas where he spent 3 years of high school, then to Bryan, and back to San Antonio in 1945. Early in 1946, the family moved to Weslaco, Texas where he graduated from high school.
He was a member of the Corps of Cadets at the A&M College of Texas (now Texas A&M University) and graduated in January 1952. He remained a proud and loyal Aggie for the rest of his life, and in 2000, he established a Charitable Remainder Trust, naming Texas A&M the beneficiary.
He was employed by the Superior Oil Company from January 1952 to November 1976, was President and Treasurer of Pegues Enterprises, Inc. through 1990, and sole proprietorship until 1995, when he retired.
He was a member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, Geophysical Society of Houston, the Texas Independent Producers & Royalty Owners Association, the Texas A&M University Century Club, the Texas A&M University Harrington Associates Program, the 12th Man Foundation, and former member of the Houston Racquet Club and the Houstonian Club. He was an avid sports enthusiast as both participant and spectator, and especially enjoyed playing tennis and golf, skiing and swimming.
He was preceded in death by his best friend and loving wife, Sue Ellen Pegues. He is survived by his daughters Christine Ann Leis & husband Jon, Linda Pegues Campbell & husband Mike, his son Lex Pegues & wife Pam, and his stepson Kelly Allen, along with six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
He loved hiking, rollerblading, taking the dogs to the beach, and traveling with his “Baby”. He exercised every other day no matter what (sep on Sundays). He had the best sense of humor too, most recently at the hospital when he told the Doctor his extremely labored breathing was “somewhat reluctant”. Also when he asked Linda, “Hand your hand forward”, and after a few minutes of rubbing it between his fingers, said, “You make a good napkin”.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Pat H. Foley Funeral Home, 1200 W 34th Street in Houston on Saturday, January 25th, 2025 at 1:00, with a reception following. The family is asking attendees to wear their favorite Aggie shirt or maroon and/or white attire in honor of their dad & his beloved Texas A&M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Living Bank or to one’s preferred charity.
