Richard "Rick" Martin '78 February 17, 2025 3:50 PM updated: February 17, 2025 3:55 PM

Richard W. "Rick" Martin

January 9, 1955 - May 18, 2023

Rick Martin 68 years old passed away suddenly in the afternoon of Thursday, May 18, 2023 in Leadville, Colorado.

He was born in Jackson, Mississippi to Katheryne McDonald Martin Terry (Kitty) and Richard Bastian Martin. After his father died at the age of 26, Rick and his mother moved to Austin, Texas. There, Kitty met and married Dr. Douglas W. Terry and together they were a family of five. Rick attended Wooldridge Elementary, O'Henry Junior High and the New Mexico Military Institute. He went on to graduate from both the University of Texas and Texas A&M University with degrees in Radio, Television and Film as well as Anthropology. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and was a lifelong runner and cyclist.

Rick spent most of his life working in his chosen field of oil and gas. In 2019, he moved to Breckenridge, Colorado to work for Vail Resorts and to ski, not necessarily in that order. He loved all that the outdoors had to offer him. He was highly intelligent, creative and a talented artist. He had an insatiable witty sense of humor. His killer smile was huge, his laugh was raucous and contagious, his kind heart was big and his hugs were genuine and strong.

Rick was pre-deceased by his parents, his sister Catherine Terry Blevins, and nephews Stephen, Richard and James Blevins. He is survived by his loving sister Patti Terry Miller (Dan), niece Melissa Pobiega (Michael), nephew Michael Blevins and first cousins William F. Martin, Laura McDonald and Mindy Smith (Jeff), along with a host of great-nieces/nephews and close friends. The Trey Wyatt family also survives him.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St Mary's Cathedral, 203 East 10th Street, Austin Texas on June 9, 2023 at 2:00 pm. A rosary will begin at 1:30.
