John Herman "Johnny" Zinsmeyer

John Herman “Johnny” Zinsmeyer, of D’Hanis, Texas passed away Friday, March 21, 2025, at the age of 72.
Johnny was born on May 3, 1952 in Hondo, Texas, one of six children born to Jacob Lionel “Jack” Zinsmeyer and Jeanice Elsie Poerner Zinsmeyer.
Johnny graduated from D’Hanis High School in 1970. He then attended Texas A&M University, Class of ’74, where he was a member of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Corp of Cadets and received his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Distribution. After graduation he worked for Perry Shankle, Alamo Iron Works, and then started a partnership later known as Sunbelt Mill Supply. He moved back to his hometown of D’Hanis in 2012 after residing in Castroville during most of his working years and raising his three sons there. Johnny retired in 2017 to spend time with his family and take care of the family ranch. He enjoyed collecting tractors and going to tractor pulls. He volunteered as the sexton for Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery and in numerous ways at Holy Cross Catholic Church. He was also an active member of the D’Hanis Lions Club.
On August 9, 1975, Johnny married Shirley Wurzbach at St. Louis Catholic Church in Castroville. Johnny and Shirley were blessed with over forty-nine years of marriage, three sons and eight grandchildren.
Johnny is survived by his wife, Shirley Zinsmeyer of D’Hanis; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Rikki Zinsmeyer of Rio Medina, Darren and Charli Zinsmeyer of D’Hanis, and Jarrett and Fabiola Zinsmeyer of Hondo; grandchildren, Mikayla, John, Bryson, Mikki, Case, Mika, Keagan and Wyatt; brother, Tony Zinsmeyer of D’Hanis; sister and brother-in-law, Laurie and David Santos of Yancey; in-laws, John Fasano of Weslaco, Missy Zinsmeyer of Bulverde, Fanny Lea Nash of Rockport, Ray Wurzbach of Castroville, and F.J. and Linda Wurzbach of Rio Medina; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Jeanice Zinsmeyer; sister, Bette Zane Fasano; brother, Charlie Zinsmeyer, and an infant sister; in-laws, Jan Nash and Patsy Wurzbach; and parents-in-law, Emmett and Tena Wurzbach.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 3, 2025 beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in D’Hanis, with the Holy Rosary recited at 5:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 4, 2025 at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in D’Hanis, Texas. A bereavement meal will be held at St. Dominic’s Parish Hall following the Committal Service at the cemetery.
Memorials may be made in Johnny’s memory to Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, D’Hanis Lions Club or to the charity of your choice.
