Emitt Logan Herod, Jr.
January 21, 1935 - May 22, 2024
Emitt Logan Herod, Jr. of Texas passed away May 22, 2024 after a brief illness and just short of 11 years after the passing of his wife, Phyllis Diane Bierman Herod. He was born January 21, 1935 in Melissa, Texas to Stella and Emitt Herod, Sr. We say Texas because he lived all over this great state
At the age of 12, he was sent from Lubbock to live on a ranch for boys in Copperas Cove. Soon after, the organization was moved to Bedford by the charity of the Variety Club of Dallas. He graduated in 1953 from Fort Worth Carter Riverside High School. He played most every sport and was a state champion Golden Gloves boxer. After a short stint at Texas A&M (it did not have the discipline to which he was accustom) and the military (that is what most every young man did if they were not in college) he landed back in Lubbock, met Mom and married June 22, 1957.
He spent the vast majority of his career, as he would say, in the "school business". Generally, if a better opportunity came along he took it. He took pride in knowing that the schools he left were in better shape after his tenure. In addition to the aforementioned towns, his life took him to Sherman, El Paso, Odessa, Fredricksburg, Brady, Gilmer, Rhome, Sadler, Gonzales, Pflugerville, Wimberley, Hilltop Lakes, Granbury, North Richland Hills, Stephenville and finally, Dallas. Some of those more than once. It seemed that anywhere he visited, there was someone there he knew.
He always had a side hustle working well into his 80's, he loved golf and he taught us to live beneath our means. He loved and was loved as Opa and Grandpa to his grandchildren Jett Minor of Austin, Melissa Reyes (Ryan) of Kyle, Logan Herod of Dallas, Erika Herod (Emma) of Seattle, Paxton Herod of Nashville, Sadie Darnell of Dallas and Sydney Herod of Dallas. There are few great grandkids, many nieces and nephews and a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law. He outlived his 4 siblings.
In passing from this life to the next he leaves a daughter Stephanie Rodriguez of San Marcos and a son Stephen Herod and wife Cathy Hernandez of Dallas.
Thank you to all who treated him with kindness, respect and care over his lifetime. He was a good friend to many. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 17, 2024 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Brady, Texas at 11:30 a.m.
