It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Ray Mayes, a loving husband, father and a lover of all things Texas A&M University; especially Aggie football. He passed away peacefully on February 28th, 2025 at the age of 78, surrounded by his loving family.
Gary was born on February 1st, 1947 in San Antonio, TX. He was the son of John Houston Mayes and Mary Elizabeth Mayes and the oldest of three siblings. He was a graduate of Floresville High School Class of 1965.
He went on to attend Texas A&M University (Class of 1969), where he earned his degree in Civil Engineering. Gary worked as a Professional Engineer for Brown and Root and Halliburton before retiring from Harris County Engineering Department.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Pam K. Mayes, and their daughter, Amy “Shelly” White and husband, Scott White, their son Jonathan Ray Mayes and wife Andrea Mayes, as well as his grandchildren, Kaylie Elizabeth (21), Josiah Ray (12), Delaney Addison (10) and Lydia Grace (6). He is also survived by sister, Catherine Hoferer and brother-in-law, Bill Hoferer, and nieces, Heather Kasper (Kyle), Kristin Ebner, Emily Walton (D.J.) and nephew, Will Hoferer. He was proceeded in death by his parents and sister, Courtney K. Ebner.
Gary was a proud and active member and donor for many years to the Association of Former Students at Texas A&M University. He also volunteered his time to coaching both of his children’s teams in Little League baseball and softball for many years.
He was a man of integrity, wisdom and generosity. He left a lasting impact on everyone he knew. We like to call that impact his “Gary-isms.”
