Thomas Wilson "Tommy" Hughes
January 14, 1945 - February 21, 2025
Thomas Wilson Hughes passed away on February 21, 2025, in Baytown, Texas.
He was born on January 14, 1945, in Cameron, Texas. He grew up in College Station, Texas, and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas A&M University. He was an officer in the United States Army and earned a Bronze Star for service in Vietnam.
Tom built custom homes in the Baytown area for almost 40 years. He took great pride in the quality of his work and his business thrived solely on word of mouth. He was a great problem-solver with a knack for numbers and an uncanny ability to calculate dimensions at a glance. He was always quick to offer advice and loved helping family, friends, and neighbors with projects.
Tom was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Houston. He served on numerous committees and in many leadership roles. He helped the church with construction projects and served as a board member at Clarewood House. He especially enjoyed the friendships he made through the Adelphi Class.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Wayland and Oleta Hughes, and sister, Rita Floeck. He is survived by his wife, Kathie Hughes; daughter and son-in-law Kate Hughes and Chris Gideon; daughter Emily Hughes; brother-in-law Norman Floeck; nieces, nephews, and friends.
A service will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at First United Methodist Church of Houston, 1320 Main Street, Houston, Texas. Visitor parking is available across from the Clay Street entrance. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the FUMC Houston Trustees Fund or to the charity of your choice.
