William "Ryan" Self 

March 31, 1938 - February 24, 2025 

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of William Ryan Self, 86. Ryan passed away peacefully at Christus Highland Medical Center on February 24, 2025. He was born in Shreveport on March 31, 1938 to Ruth and Elmer Self and grew up in Vivian.

He graduated in the first class from North Caddo High School in 1956 and headed for Texas A&M University, an all-male Corps of Cadets at the time. After graduation from A&M in 1960, Lt. Self completed his service in the Army at Ft. Benning, Georgia; He especially enjoyed Airborne School.

Ryan had two careers: twenty years with Ralston Purina and twenty years with Ruth Woodman Real Estate; he enjoyed the work and the many friendships that formed over the years. In work or play, he was fiercely competitive. He thoroughly enjoyed handball, waterskiing and boating. He loved dogs; cats came a close second. There were always animals. In the beginning, cattle roamed his small farm; later, thoroughbreds.

Ryan is survived by his wife, Gene Thomas-Self and daughter, Amanda Self.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
