Leland Thomas Jordan was born in Lufkin, Angelina, Texas to Judge Thomas Watson Jordan and Ann Elizabeth Largent. His father, Thomas Watson Jordan, was a law partner with Nathan Wright, Jessie Louise Wright's father. Thomas Watson Jordan later became County Judge of Angelina County, Texas.

Being their families were close Leland knew Jessie from early childhood. Leland pleged his love to her forever when he gave her a valentine at about age seven. Leland Jordan grew up and went away to college to Texas A&M University. He kept Jessie close to his thoughts and his heart. Leland graduated in 1927 and was offerred a professional position with an oil company which he accepted.

Leland Jordan and Jessie Wright were married on March 4, 1935, in San Antonio, Texas. Leland and Jessie resided in Venuzuela for about thirteen years where he was working in an executive position for Gulf Oil. They then went to Kuwait for several years where Leland concluded his successful professional career and he retired.

Leland and Jessie Jordan traveled the world and knew people from many countries and cultures. They could have lived just about any place they chose for retirement years. They chose to return home home to Lufkin, Angelia County, Texas. This was where their family and lifelong friends were. Their final years together were happy with their family, friends, colleagues, social life, and community involvement in the Lufkin area. Leland Jordan died in 1976.

Jessie remained active for many years. She conferred with Texas A&M University wanting to honor Leland Jordan's life with a vison that would that be consistent with his character, and be a part of the University that he loved. Thus the L. T. Jordan Institue of International Awareness came to be. Many students lives have been enriched by the programs that promote international awareness, give students opportunities to learn about other cultures, experience travel and gain knowlege about this world.
