JOSE A. MARTINEZ
PHARR - Jose A. Martinez passed away peacefully at home on June 12, 2011. J.A. was born in McAllen on
October 20, 1918. He was the eldest son and the third of ten children born to Jose B. and Maria Ayala de Martinez of McAllen. Known to his friends and family as Pepe, J.A. was a graduate of McAllen High School, attended Texas A&M, Class of '42, at College Station, and served his country during WWII at Kunming in China in the United States Army Air Corps supporting the elite Flying Tigers Voluntary Group. He entered the U.S. Army on August 6,1942 and was stationed at Bora Bora, Society Islands, Perth, Camp Chupara outside of Calcutta, Assam, India, and Burma. He also flew the "the Hump" over the Himalayas to China.

After encircling the world during WWII, he returned to the family grocery business and married his lovely wife Maria, whom he lost ten years ago. He farmed family land south and east of McAllen for over 30 years and worked for the Texas Employment Commission from which he retired in 1985.

He is survived by their six children: Luis Carlos Martinez of Medford, Oregon; George Alfonso Martinez and wife Karen Lynn of Roseville, California; Sylvia Esther (Martinez) and husband Dr. George Moreng of Overland Park, Kansas; Roger Felipe Martinez and wife Avis Jean of San Antonio; Maria Teresa Martinez of Pharr; and Carmen Laura (Martinez) Golden of Houston. His six grandchildren are: Kimberly Dawn Martinez, Sean Thornton Martinez, Dr. Kate Louise Moreng, Kevin Christopher Martinez, Anya Naomi Martinez, and John Patrick Martinez. He is also survived by his sisters Luisa and Maria Lidia Martinez of McAllen.

J. A. Martinez was a respected businessman who was a member of and generous contributor to St. Jude's Catholic Church for over sixty years. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends!

The rosary will be conducted at Kreidler Funeral Home, 314 N 10th St, McAllen Wednesday at 7 P.M. Funeral Mass will be at St. Jude's Catholic Church, 505 S. Ironwood, Pharr, Thursday at 9 A.M. Following the service, burial will be at La Piedad , 1801 Wichita, McAllen. Kreidlerfuneralhome.com
