Lee M. Tillman ’84

Lee attended Texas A&M University on a President’s Endowed Scholarship and graduated in 1984 with a degree in chemical engineering. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in chemical engineering at Auburn University. Lee joined Marathon Oil Corporation in 2013 where he retired as president and CEO as well as chairman of the board in 2024. Prior to joining Marathon Oil, Lee served as vice president of engineering for ExxonMobil Development Company (a project design and execution company), where he was responsible for all global engineering staff engaged in major project concept selection, front-end design and engineering. He served as North Sea production manager and lead country manager for subsidiaries of ExxonMobil in Stavanger, Norway from 2007 and 2010 and as acting vice president for ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company from 2006 to 2007. Lee began his career in the oil and gas industry at Exxon Corporation in 1989 as a research engineer and has extensive operations management and leadership experience that has included assignments in Jakarta, Indonesia; Aberdeen, Scotland; Stavanger, Norway; Malabo, Equatorial Guinea; Dallas and New Orleans. He is a member of the Chemical Engineering and Engineering Advisory Councils of Texas A&M University and is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. Lee also serves on the boards of the Houston Area and Southwest Region of the American Heart Association, is a member of the Celebration of Reading Committee within the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation and serves on the advisory board of Spindletop Charities where he received the Spindletop Award in 2019. Lee also received the Texas Oil and Gas Association's Distinguished Service Award in 2014. Prior to his election to The Association of Former Students’ Board of Directors, Lee served as a representative at large and he is also a member of the 12th Man Foundation Champions Council and was recognized as an Eppright Distinguished Donor. Lee was selected as an Outstanding Alumnus of the Auburn University Samuel Ginn College of Engineering in 2014 and an Outstanding Alumni for the Texas A&M College of Engineering in 2019.
